Dark brown or reddish heartwood distinct from the pale brown or grayish sapwood. Grain straight to interlocked, texture medium, luster moderate and not distinctive odor. It is considered the successor of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and cedar (Cedrela spp.).

Heartwood light yellowish brown distinct from the pale brown sapwood. It has an accentuated fibrous aspect at the tangential figure, due to prominence of axial parenchyma, fibers and vascular lines, Grain interlocked, texture coarse, luster lacking and with no distinct odor.

Heartwood light reddish brown, slightly distinct from the reddish gray sapwood. Distinct growth rings, grain interlocked, texture medium, luster medium and disagreeable odor.

Light wood; core changing from dark pinkish-beige or light pinkish-brown, more or less intense, to brownish-red; thick texture; straight or lightly wavy grain, shiny surface with golden reflexes; characteristic smell, pleasant, intense in some samples, almost absent in others; lightly bitter taste.

Heartwood pinkish gray not clearly demarcated from the lighter sapwood. Figure with dark vascular lines. Grain wavy, texture coarse, disagreeable odor when wet, disappearing when dried, without distinctive taste.

Moderately heavy wood; core yellowish-beige, uniform, exceptionally showing some darker streaks, alburnum hardly differentiated from the core; grain: from straight to irregular, surface irregularly polished and averagely smooth to the touch, strong smell, peculiar pleasant, reminding vanilla; lightly sweet taste.
